32. The Eastern Wall

The midnight air was biting, carrying the sharp scent of upcoming rain across the northern district. At exactly 11:45 PM, the three of us slipped out from the shadows of the transit station, moving like ghosts through the quiet, tree-lined avenues leading to the outermost edge of the Kim family estate.

Our phones were completely powered down, tucked away in lead-lined shielding pouches inside our bags. Only the low-power, localized radio earpieces hummed with a faint, steady static in our ears.

"Transit checkpoint passed," So-min’s voice crackled softly through the earpiece. "The Park Foundation digital certificate cleared our proximity signature. The automated neighborhood drones are ignoring us."

"Copy that," Rora whispered, adjusting the straps of her pack as she crouched low behind a dense row of manicured hedges. "We're approaching the eastern stone wall now."

Up close, the perimeter wall looked staggering. Built from heavy, dark granite blocks and topped with integrated glass-shard security fixtures, it rose nearly twelve feet above the pavement. High above, nestled in the branches of an ancient, overhanging willow tree, the primary security camera swept its motorized lens in a rhythmic, mechanical arc.

Da-eun pulled up next to Rora, checking the glowing interface of the custom signal sniffer on her wrist. "The lens is rotating. We have twenty seconds until it enters the willow tree's shadow zone."

"Get ready," Rora murmured, her heart hammering against her ribs. She reached into her bag, pulling out the compact, rubber-coated tactical step-ladders they had prepped.

"Ten seconds," Da-eun counted down, her eyes locked on the moving camera housing. "Five... four... three... two... one. The blind spot is active. Go!"

With practiced synchronization, Da-eun and Rora hoisted the lightweight ladder against the granite wall. Rora scrambled up first, her soft-soled shoes making no sound against the stone. She reached the top ledge, carefully navigating around the glass fixtures, and looked down into the dark, expansive courtyard of the Kim estate.

The inner grounds were completely silent, illuminated only by low-profile pathway lights.

"Clear," Rora whispered into her mic. "Drop the secondary line."

Da-eun scrambled up right behind her, while So-min secured the base of the wall, keeping her tablet active to monitor any sudden anomalies in the local network grid. But as Rora swung her legs over the top of the wall to lower herself into the courtyard, she froze.

Down in the shadows directly beneath the willow tree, something was wrong. A heavy, dark cable—one that hadn't been present on any of the older architectural wireframes—was snaked across the grass, plugged directly into the ground-level terminal node they were supposed to interface with.

The node terminal wasn't closed. It was already open, its internal diagnostic lights pulsing a steady, rhythmic blue.

Someone else was already tapped into the Kims' private network.

Chapter 50: Caught in the Light

The sight of the pulsing blue terminal wire held them paralyzed for a single, terrifying heartbeat. The countdown was relentless. Thirty-five seconds. Thirty-six.

"The lens is turning back," So-min’s sharp voice hissed through the earpieces from the other side of the wall. "Move, now!"

"Drop!" Rora whispered, grabbing Da-eun’s arm.

They abandoned the plan to splice into the node. Dropping down from the twelve-foot ledge, they hit the manicured grass with a muffled, heavy thud. Shaking off the impact, they bolted away from the willow tree's shadow, sprinting blindly toward the dark stone archway that marked the entrance of the courtyard path.

They crossed the threshold just as a blinding, high-intensity halogen spotlight snapped to life above the archway, pinning them directly in its beam.

"Stop right there," a cold, smooth voice commanded.

Three figures stepped out from the deep shadows of the main villa's veranda. In the center stood Kim Seo-jun, the family's eldest, his arms crossed over a tailored coat. To his left was Min-jun, his fingers casually tapping the screen of a handheld security console, and on his right stood Ji-hoon, his face completely unreadable.

The trap hadn't just been set; it had been waiting for them.

"Lee Da-eun. Lee Dain, known as Rora," Seo-jun said, stepping into the edge of the spotlight. A thin, mocking smile played on his lips. "And I assume Jung So-min is hiding just on the other side of our perimeter wall."

Da-eun's breath hitched, but she forced herself to stand tall, stepping slightly in front of Rora. The weight of the metallic briefcase from earlier, the SNU scholarships, the fake intruder bluff—none of it mattered now. They were standing deep inside the lion's den.

Min-jun glanced down at his console, a faint chuckle escaping his lips. "You really thought a Park Family Foundation certificate would blind our network tracking? We let you walk right through the front gate's transit nodes. We wanted to see exactly what you were looking for."

Ji-hoon stepped forward, his eyes locking onto the backpacks they carried. "The school grid wasn't enough for you. You had to come to our home. Now, let's talk about what happens next."
