31. Guilty Or Protection?

The heavy oak door of the Principal’s office clicked shut, leaving the room instantly silent. The golden crests on the three scholarship packets gleamed under the fluorescent lights, sitting flat on the polished mahogany table like anchor weights.

So-min didn't reach for her packet. She stood entirely frozen, her eyes fixed on the empty space where Chae-won had just been standing. The typical, razor-sharp focus in her gaze had dissolved, replaced by a sudden, hollow blankness.

"So-min?" Da-eun asked softly, taking a step toward her. "Are you checking the perimeter logs?"

She didn't answer. Instead, her hands began to tremble slightly as she dropped her backpack onto a nearby chair. She turned away from the table, walking over to the large floor-to-ceiling window, staring down at the courtyard where Chae-won's sleek white car was just pulling out of the academy gates.

"She thinks she saved us," So-min whispered, her voice cracking in a way I had never heard before. "She literally went to her family foundation, used her name, and put her own reputation on the line to buy us a way out."

Rora walked over, placing a gentle hand on So-min’s shoulder. "So-min, Chae-won did a wonderful thing. This scholarship means—"

"It means we're lying to her face!" So-min snapped, spinning around, her eyes bright with a mixture of anger and intense guilt. "Don't you get it? She’s doing all of this because she genuinely believes we’re safe. She thinks we listened to her. And tonight, while she’s sleeping peacefully thinking her friends are out of danger, we’re going to use her family’s clearance to break into the Kims' estate."

She looked down at her hands, her voice dropping into a desperate, choked murmur. "It feels like a betrayal. She trusts us completely, and we're treating her protection like a tactical asset. If we get caught tonight... the Park family name gets dragged into the mud right along with us. We're gambling with her life too."

Da-eun exchanged a long, heavy look with Roraa. In all the months we had spent decoding networks and dodging trackers, So-min had always been our structural pillar—the cold, logical engineer who treated every obstacle as an equation to be solved. Seeing the guilt break through her armor made the looming midnight deadline feel suddenly terrifying.

Rora stepped in closer, wrapping both arms around So-min in a tight, unyielding hug. "Look at me, Jung So-min," Dain said fiercely, her voice steady and grounded. "We are not betraying her. We are protecting her."

"How is lying to her protecting her?" So-min muttered into Rora's shoulder.

"Because if Chae-won knows the truth, she becomes an accomplice," Da- eun said, stepping up beside them and resting my hand over So-min's. "The Kims play dirty. If they find out someone is digging into Sector-04 and they trace it back to Chae-won's involvement, they will ruin the Parks. By keeping her completely in the dark, she has absolute, undeniable plausible deniability. She isn't lying to the alliance; she truly believes we stopped."

Rora pulled back slightly, looking straight into So-min’s eyes. "We aren't throwing her trust away. We are carrying the danger so she doesn't have to. We take the SNU scholarships, we secure our futures just like she wanted, but we finish this fight so the past can never come back to hurt her either."

So-min let out a long, shaky breath, her shoulders finally dropping as the suffocating guilt slowly shifted into a quiet, grim resolve. She wiped her eyes quickly with the back of her sleeve, her analytical mask slowly sliding back into place.

"You two are terrible logicians," So-min whispered, a faint, watery smile finally appearing on her face. "But... you're right. If we're going to use her shield, we'd better make sure we don't miss."

The living room of the Lee apartment was silent, illuminated only by the pale blue glow of three separate laptop screens. The gold-embossed scholarship packets sat on the coffee table, a stark reminder of the trust Chae-won had placed in them.

So-min’s fingers flew across her keyboard, her eyes reflecting rows of streaming system data. The heavy guilt from earlier had completely crystallized into an icy, flawless precision.

"Chae-won’s father signed the foundation vouchers using a high-tier corporate digital certificate," So-min said, her voice quiet but sharp. "I’ve mapped the digital footprint of that certificate. It grants us access to the outer-tier transit logs near the Kims' estate. If a patrol drone scans our coordinates tonight, the system will automatically read our presence as a pre-approved student academic visit sponsored by the Park Foundation."

"The perfect digital camouflage," Da-eun murmured, leaning over a physical map of the Kim estate she had drawn from memory. "But that only gets us past the outer perimeter check. What about the actual courtyard?"

Rora slid her laptop forward, displaying a three-dimensional wireframe model of the Kim family residence.

"The main courtyard has a localized, closed-loop security array," Rora explained, pointing to three blinking red dots on the display. "These are high-frequency thermal sensors. They don't upload to the cloud, which means I can't hack them remotely. We have to bypass them physically."

"The dead zone," Da-eun noted, tracing a line along the eastern stone wall. "The shadow cast by the old willow tree blocks the primary lens angle for exactly forty seconds during the automated lens sweep."

"Exactly," Rora nodded, her face grim. "We have forty seconds to scale the wall, drop into the inner courtyard, and interface directly with the ground-level terminal node. Once I’m plugged in, I can loop the video feed manually, giving us a clean ten-minute window to find the subterranean entry point."

So-min closed her laptop with a soft, definitive click, looking at Rora and Da-eun. "We have our alibi, we have our window, and we have our targets. Double-check your packs. No personal devices, no tracking pings. We leave for the north transit station in exactly two hours."
