Chapter 41: The Critical Overload
The countdown hit zero, and Rora tapped the enter key with a sharp, definitive click.
On her screen, the mirage script initialized perfectly. A massive surge of synthetic data packets flooded the Eastern Gate router, mimicking a heavy, unencrypted device backup. Across the street, the dashboard terminal inside the black sedan lit up like a Christmas tree, its automated high-frequency interceptor instantly pivoting 180 degrees to capture the ghost stream.
"The feed shifted," So-min whispered, looking at her live node monitor. "The Western wall is completely dark. Go. Now."
They moved too fast. Adrenaline overtook caution.
Rora and Da-eun bolted from the library, slipping out the side exit and sprinting through the damp alleyway toward the utility shed. There was no steam whiteout this time—only the fragile digital shield of a distracted tracker.
Da-eun dropped to the gravel, throwing her weight against the iron hatch. With a harsh, metallic scrape, they hoisted the lid open. The dark concrete steps of Sub-Level B loomed beneath them. Rora stepped onto the first ledge, her heart pounding in her ears, ready to plunge into the forgotten past.
Then, the campus speakers erupted.
A high-pitched, deafening security siren tore through the quiet morning air, accompanied by the flashing amber strobe lights of the academy's secondary lockdown perimeter.
[SYSTEM ALERT: MULTIPLE MAC CLONING DETECTED]
[LOCATION: EASTERN GATE / REGIONAL OVERRIDE]
[STATUS: LOCKING ALL PERIMETER ACCESS POINTS]
Rora froze on the steps, the flashlight beam trembling in her hand. The script hadn't just distracted the tracker—it had tripped a hardcoded, silent threshold inside the Kim family's main firewall. The Kims didn't just log the data; their system automatically assumed a brute-force network intrusion was underway and triggered a total facility lockdown.
Before Da-eun could even scream a warning, the heavy, motorized steel security gates above the alleyway began grinding downward at maximum speed.
"Rora, get out! It's closing!" Da-eun yelled, reaching down into the dark hatch.
Rora scrambled backward up the crumbling steps, but as she reached the surface, a heavy mechanical click echoed from the utility shed's roof. The automated campus cameras didn't loop back—they snapped violently to life, their high-definition lenses rotating directly toward the open hatch.
Through the thinning trees at the edge of the property line, the black sedan roared to life, its tires screeching as the tracker realized the Eastern stream was a decoy. He was tearing down the block, heading straight for their exact coordinates.
The digital mirage had collapsed. The facility was locking down, the tracker was closing in, and the girls were caught completely in the open, trapped between a sealed bunker and a compromised perimeter.
Chapter 42: The Art of the Bluff
The screech of the black sedan’s tires echoed from the street corner just as the amber strobe lights pulsed overhead. The automated security cameras on the utility shed were locked onto them, their lenses humming as they adjusted their focus.
Panic threatened to paralyze them, but Da-eun’s eyes snapped to the heavy chemistry workbook she had brought along, and then to Rora's tablet, which was still displaying the viral video interface over the script logs.
An idea struck her—sharp, reckless, and their only way out.
"Drop the hatch! Kick the gravel over it!" Da-eun commanded, her voice dropping into a fierce, authoritative whisper.
Rora didn't hesitate. She threw her weight against the iron lid, slamming it shut, while So-min used her boots to aggressively scatter dirt and dead leaves back over the seam.
"Now, scream," Da-eun told Rora. "Look terrified."
Before Rora could even ask why, Da-eun grabbed her own phone, threw her backpack onto the damp ground so its contents spilled out, and pulled Rora into the center of the alleyway just as two campus security guards rounded the corner, stun batons drawn.
"Hey! Stay where you are!" the lead guard shouted, his radio crackling with urgent alerts from the main server room.
Instead of running or looking guilty, Da-eun let out a sharp, panicked cry, pointing frantically toward the high concrete perimeter wall behind the utility shed.
"He went over the wall!" Da-eun yelled, her voice shaking with a perfectly fabricated mix of terror and adrenaline. "We were just sitting here watching a video during break, and some guy in a dark jacket literally jumped down from the shed roof! He knocked my bag over and ran toward the main gates!"
The guards froze, their eyes darting from the spilled textbooks to the girls, who looked completely shaken. Rora, catching on instantly, clutched her tablet to her chest, her shoulders trembling. "He... he had a camera or something in his hand. He looked right at us!"
The bluff was flawless. It perfectly explained why the security cameras had detected movement in the restricted alleyway, and it shifted the blame entirely away from the network anomaly. To the guards, these weren't hackers; they were targeted students who had just witnessed a trespasser.
"We need to check the exterior grid!" the second guard barked into his shoulder radio. "Intruder sighted near the Western wall, moving toward the main gates. The students are secure."
"You three, get inside the main building immediately," the lead guard ordered, gesturing toward the glass doors. "The campus is on total lockdown until we clear the perimeter."
"Yes, sir," Da-eun said, quickly scooping up her scattered papers and grabbing Rora and So-min by the arms.
They rushed back through the heavy glass doors, blending instantly into the crowd of frightened students filling the hallways. Outside, the black sedan slowed to a crawl near the main gates, its driver watching the campus guards sprint away from the utility shed and toward the front entrance.
The stranger had been outmaneuvered. The Kims' security teams were hunting a ghost, the tracker was forced to retreat to avoid detection, and the three girls walked down the corridor, their hands shaking but their cover completely intact.
They had escaped by the skin of their teeth, but the close call proved that the academy grounds were a minefield.
