The doors of the SUV slammed shut, and Chae-won threw the vehicle into drive, tearing away from the curb just as a shadow emerged from the alleyway behind them. The interior of the car was dead silent, save for the heavy, ragged breathing of Da-eun, Rora, and So-min.
Chae-won kept her eyes glued to the rearview mirror, navigating the twisting backstreets of the city with practiced precision until the flashing security lights of the estate district finally faded into the distance.
"Chae-won, how did you know?" Da-eun asked, leaning forward between the front seats, her voice trembling. "And who is that person following us?"
Chae-won tightly gripped the steering wheel, her knuckles turning white. She didn't look back. "I saw the security alerts on my brother's tablet. That's all."
"But the Kims were waiting for us," Rora pressed, clutching her backpack to her chest. "They knew exactly when we were coming. Why are they targeting us like this? What is actually hidden under that courtyard?"
Chae-won pulled the SUV up to the corner of So-min’s street, keeping the engine idling in the shadows. She finally turned to look at them, her expression guarded and deeply exhausted.
"I can't tell you that," Chae-won said quietly but firmly. "If I tell you why the Kims are watching, or why the alliance really broke apart seven years ago, it puts all of us in even more danger. You saw what happened tonight. They aren't playing games."
"Chae-won, we almost died out there!" So-min whispered fiercely.
"Which is exactly why you need to stop," Chae-won replied, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Go home. Go back to your lives. Let them think you're terrified. Because if you step foot near that courtyard again, none of us will be able to save you."
One by one, Chae-won dropped the girls off at their respective houses under the cover of the early morning darkness. She offered no more explanations, no answers to the cipher, and no clues about the families' past. She left them with nothing but a warning and a heavy, suffocating silence.
Safe inside their own rooms, the adrenaline finally began to fade, leaving behind a cold reality. They were completely cut off, the secrets were heavily guarded, and the people they thought they knew were keeping secrets darker than they ever imagined.
The lock on the auxiliary phone clicked into place. Safe back inside their shared bedroom, with the dawn light just beginning to crack the horizon, Da-eun and Rora didn't dare sleep. The physical world was too dangerous, but the digital one was still theirs to command—as long as they stayed behind the firewall Rora had built.
Sitting cross-legged on the floor between their twin beds, Rora opened the childhood encryption application on her device. They couldn't speak out loud; even with the door shut, In-ah could be listening from the hallway. Instead, they used the phones to loop So-min into the room, reverting to the very first layered cipher they had invented as kids—a system that substituted letters based on shared memories and specific page numbers of books only the three of them owned.
A soft notification blinked on the screen as they sat side by side, watching the digital ink appear.
[So-min]: [04.12.98 // System Override] My street is quiet. No signs of pursuit here. Are you two secure?
Da-eun tapped the screen, her shoulder brushing against Rora's as she typed their reply, the code translating instantly through the local decryption key.
[Da-eun]: [Grid-Lock] We're inside. In-ah’s server is still running the loop you set up, Rora. She has no idea we ever left our beds. But my hands won't stop shaking.
Rora took the phone, her thumbs moving deliberately to keep the code intact.
[Rora]: [Archive-True] We have to stay completely dark in public now. Chae-won was terrified. If she’s risking her safety to pull us out of a trap, the Kims have the entire perimeter bugged. From now on, we don't mention the courtyard, the initials, or the mansion.
[So-min]: [04.12.98] Agreed. We play the part they expect. Terrified, defeated, and compliant. Let them think the shock of tonight broke us. We go to school, we do our homework, we do nothing.
[Da-eun]: [Grid-Lock] But we aren't stopping. Chae-won wouldn't tell us why the alliance broke, which means the answer is exactly what they're willing to protect at all costs. We let the dust settle. We watch, we listen, and we wait for the Kims to let their guard down.
The chat window went still. One by one, the status dots shifted from green to gray as they logged out, deleting the temporary cache files from their devices. Da-eun and Rora exchanged a silent, heavy look across the dim room, hiding the phones back in their secret spot just as the first morning light hit the floorboards.
