10. Who Is It?

Da-eun and Rora slipped back into the bedroom under the pretense of getting their sweaters, closing the door until it clicked softly. The second the door was shut, So-min wriggled out from beneath the twin bed, brushing dust off her knees.

"Did she suspect anything?" So-min whispered, her voice barely audible.

"No, we threw her off with a lie about being bored," Rora whispered back, pulling her phone out. "But we're stuck. We stared at that lock, and we have absolutely no idea what J.Y. and Y.E. mean. If it's a cipher, it's not one of the standard ones we used as kids."

So-min leaned against the bedpost, her brow furrowing as she looked at the photo scan again. "If we don't know the key to the cipher, the only way to figure out what's inside that shed is to go back out there and look for another clue around the water tower. Maybe there's something hidden in the structure itself."

A heavy silence fell over the room.

Da-eun looked toward the window, the image of the masked figure lunging from the thicket flashing vividly behind her eyes. Her hands were still slightly trembling from the adrenaline.

"We can't go back out there," Da-eun admitted, her voice cracking slightly. "Not right now. Whoever that was, they were waiting for us. They were aggressive. If we go back into those woods without knowing who is out there, we're walking straight into a trap."

Rora nodded fervently, her face pale. "I'm too terrified to step past the porch right now. That person wasn't just trying to scare us—they wanted our backpacks. They wanted the files."

Trapped inside the cabin by their own fear and In-ah's watchful eye, and locked out of the secret by a cipher they couldn't decode, the trio felt completely paralyzed. The answers were less than a mile away, but the forest felt like an impenetrable fortress.

POV: The Observer in the Shadows

The engine of the sleek black sedan purred in low, rhythmic static, completely masked by the thick wall of pines overlooking the ridge. Inside the darkened cabin of the vehicle, the dashboard glows casting sharp, angular shadows across a leather-gloved hand resting on the steering wheel.

He pulled back the sleeve of his dark coat, checking his watch. The girls had retreated back to the old house faster than anticipated. They were skittish, like birds startled from a branch.

He didn't need to break into the cabin—not yet. In-ah’s sudden return from the market had complicated things, but the chess pieces were exactly where they needed to be. The younger ones were panicking, tracing lines on paper maps and hacking into old, dying routers, completely oblivious to the scale of the net closing around them.

He reached over to the passenger seat, tapping the screen of a handheld scanning device. It hummed quietly, capturing the faint data packets bouncing off the cabin's auxiliary network. He watched the encrypted traffic logs flicker across the digital interface.

They had seen the initials on the iron padlock. They thought it was a cipher. They were looking for a code that didn't exist in their encryption books.

A low, humorless smile touched his lips in the dim light of the dashboard. Let them stare at the letters J.Y. and Y.E. and look for patterns in numbers. Let them believe the danger was just an abstract puzzle to solve from the safety of a locked bedroom. The longer they spent trying to decode the past, the less prepared they would be when the front door finally opened.

He shifted the car into reverse, letting the vehicle coast backward down the dirt trail without turning on the headlights, vanishing into the deep twilight of the valley.
